Jeffrey Jeturian took up Broadcast Communication at the University of the Philippines. After college in 1983, he worked in film production holding various posts through the next 15 years, including production assistant, script continuity, art director, production designer and assistant director, before achieving his dream of becoming a full-fledged film director in 1998.
His debut film Enter Love ("Sana Pag-ibig Na",1998), a touching story between a mistress and her deceased lover's son, shot on a meager budget of US$50,000 did not do well at the box-office but reaped acclaim from the local critics and award-giving bodies.
Fetch A Pail Of Water ("Pila Balde",1999), Jeffery's second effort, proved to be more auspicious. A socio-realist film that tackles the plight of slum dwellers and their struggle for survival was both a commercial and critical success, the film clinched the NETPAC Jury Award at the 1st CineManila International Film Festival in 1999 and a Gold Award at the 2000 Worldfest International Film Festival in Houston, Texas, USA.
His third film Larger Than Life ("Tuhog",2000), is a satirical take on the state of filmmaking in his country and the filmmaker's penchant to beautify and sanitize reality at the expense of truth and in the name of commerce. It was officially selected to compete in the ‘Cinema of the Present' section of the prestigious Venice International Film Festival in 2001, and won a Gold Award at the 2002 Worldfest International Film Festival in Houston, Texas, USA.
Jeffrey's succeeding films are Bridal Shower (2004), One Moment More ("Minsan Pa", 2004) and Bikini Open (2005). His latest film, The Bet Collector ("Kubrador",2006) is yet to be released. |
