The Icon I have chosen is The Western Railway - Mumbai.
The Western Railway forms a lifeline to millions of people in Mumbai who travel daily from home to office/work and back. People getting on to it during peak time describe it and compare it to a massage.
Here they get squeezed, pushed, squashed, stamped, pressured and sometimes even robbed or abused but life goes on.
The trains run packed from morning to night and consistently on time. It's an integral part of Mumbai and maybe Mumbai would stop functioning without it.
People from all walks of life travel on it. The trains go so packed sometimes that quite often you may find people hanging on to it from the door, holding on from the window and even climbing on to the train.
The people travelling on it form the community whose survival depends on the trains as any other mode is either too expensive or too time consuming.
The story as told through the images is that its morning peak hour and the train arrives in time. Lots of people warm up to get into the train as it is quite an excercise. Once in the train, the battle is not over. To be able to stand on your two feet comfortably without getting pushed is quite a task.
All one can think of is the thought of their destination arriving fast. The train almost always does reach in time. A large distance is efficiently and speedily though a little uncomfortbly reached |
