The "CATAMARAN"

The "Catamaran" has been in existence over centuries all along the coromandal coast of India, used as the fishing boat by the south Indian community to which I belong to be my savored "Icon" of my choice.

The word derived from Tamil language "kattu maram". "Kattu" means tie-up/bind, "Maram" means logs/wood and thus been coined as "Catamaran" in English.

From ancient times the invention of "Catamaran" came to existence for man living in sea coastal hamlets of India to go into the seas to catch fish for food and their lively hood. "Catamaran" had been under use by majority of the Indian fisherman for over centuries.

Therefore, I propose this vanishing "Catamaran", since after Tsunami 12/26, the fisherman who lost their property were supplied with fiberglass motorized boats, nets etc, to continue their profession by several non-governmental organizations.

Over years, the advent of fiberglass-motorized boats has made large catches possible both easily and safely. They have become a rival to the age-old traditional use of catamaran for catching fish.

The durable fiberglass boat is non-corrosive for the sea weather conditions. The motorized boat is a plus point for the fishermen who go for a long sea venture for a better yield.

The traditional "Catamaran" is vanishing, replacing it with fiberglass-motorized boats, benefits the Indian community with a larger catch/yield, both for their consumption as well as for marketing the excess.

The process of rehabilitation with fiberglass boats has done a miracle for the uplift of people in plenty of food and rise in standards of living of people solely depending on fishing as their in profession and trade.
